Barcode types
Code 128
Code 128 holds any plain ASCII text: letters, digits and marks. It is short for the data it holds.
Shipping labels, warehouse tags and many internal codes use it.
EAN-13
EAN-13 has 13 digits. The last digit is a check digit. Type 12 digits and the page adds it.
Products in shops in most countries carry an EAN-13 code. Books use it for the ISBN.
UPC-A
UPC-A has 12 digits. The last digit is a check digit. Type 11 digits and the page adds it.
Products in shops in the United States and Canada carry a UPC-A code.
Code 39
Code 39 holds capital letters, digits, space and the marks - . $ / + %.
Asset tags, ID badges and car parts use it. It is old, and almost every scanner reads it.
ITF and ITF-14
ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5) holds digits in pairs, so the number of digits must be even. The page adds a 0 at the start when you type an odd number.
ITF-14 has 14 digits with a check digit. Cartons and cases of products carry it.
PDF417
PDF417 is a stack of short rows of bars. It holds a lot of text, up to 1000 characters on this page.
Boarding passes, ID cards and shipping labels use it.
Data Matrix
Data Matrix is a small square of dots. It holds a lot of data in a very small space.
Electronics, medicine packs and small parts use it.
Questions
Is the barcode generator free?
Yes. It is free. There are no ads, no limits and no sign-up. You can download PNG and SVG files and make many codes from a CSV.
Do you upload my data?
No. The page draws every code on your device. The values, the CSV file and the images never go to a server. Read more about privacy.
Which barcode type do I need for a product in a shop?
Use EAN-13 for shops in most countries. Use UPC-A for shops in the United States and Canada. Both are 13 or 12 digits with a check digit.
Where do I get the number for a product?
GS1 gives out company prefixes. This page makes a correct code from any number, but it does not give you the right to use that number in shops.
What is a check digit?
It is the last digit of EAN-13, UPC-A and ITF-14. A formula makes it from the other digits. A scanner uses it to find a misread. The page adds it or checks it for you.
How do I know that my barcode scans?
The page reads the picture back after it draws it. It says if the code scans and gives reasons if it may not. Always test a printed code with a real scanner too.
How do I make many barcodes at once?
Paste a CSV or choose a file. Put one value on each line, or use two columns: the value and the file name. The page makes a ZIP file with one image for each row. You can make up to 1000 rows.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
Use SVG for print. It stays sharp at any size. Use PNG for web pages and documents. Pick a larger module width for a larger PNG.
Which barcode type do I use for boxes and cartons?
ITF-14 is common on cartons of products. Code 128 is common on shipping labels and in warehouses. Ask your partner which type they scan.
